The Last Hurrah

During the final week before Marty's parent left, they took a train to Paris and spent a few days exploring the city.  We enjoyed a low key weekend, taking our first family bike ride and checking out a little soapbox derby race.

Then we all went to Gruyères.  Home of delicious cheese, double creme and meringue, the Cailler chocolate factory...and the Alien bar.  It was the perfect time to take a drive, with fields and fields of beautiful bright yellow flowers.  It was breathtaking to see these bright spots throughout the lush green of the countryside.  When I told Hayden we were going to a castle, he was so excited.  He said he wanted to go see the King.

Before Marty's parents came, I created two documents of things to do and meals to prepare.  Gruyères and Cailler were on the list as was going to try filets de perches.  The restaurant we tried was new to us and their lemon butter preparation was delicious!

It has been nearly a week since Marty's parents left.  It was truly a memorable visit for us all and I am glad we got to enjoy some quality time with them, and them with the boys.

Working 9 to 5!

I've been a bit behind on posts because I have started back at work!  I've been back for about 1.5 weeks now.  It's definitely been quite an adjustment and unfortunately, it has been poorly timed with Beckham getting a bad cold and cough, which has led to restless nights.  He's been really healthy but shortly after we came back from Amsterdam, Hayden brought home a cold and we all got it.  It seems Beckham got the worst of it though, and after nearly two weeks, he's still pretty sick and not his usual self.

Otherwise, things have gone relatively well.  The boys are doing well with our nanny, which is a huge weight off my shoulders.  Marty and I have had to coordinate schedules much more than ever, because we only have her scheduled from 8:30 - 5:30 every day.  So every morning, someone takes Hayden to the bus at 7:50, someone has to stay with Beckham until 8:30 and someone has to leave work at 5:00 to catch the tram and be home by 5:30.  I think we are quickly realizing that both our jobs have lots of late meetings so it's been tough to leave by 5:00 BUT if we don't leave that early, then it means we have even less time with the boys.  They need to be in bed by 7:30, especially Hayden, so he can get enough rest so it's not a battle the next morning, to get to the bus on time.  It's a never ending cycle...

I remember doing this when I went back to work after having Hayden.  It is not easy to go from all day with the baby to only 2 hours or less.  And often, that doesn't feel like quality time because it consists of  a rushed sequence of dinner, bath and bedtime.

I've been thankful for a couple of bank holidays in May.  We just had a 3-day weekend, and it was SO nice to sleep in and catch up a bit after interrupted nights with the baby.

Friday night, Marty and I went out to dinner (Marty surprised me!)  We went to an interesting little restaurant that is half clothing boutique, half restaurant.  The portions were a little small but the food and service were great.  I met the owner and she was really very nice.  She and her daughter created the concept for the restaurant 9 years ago.

On Sunday, we went with friends to Les Caves Ouvertes - essentially an open house for the area wineries.  There are two big ones, one on the north side of the lake and the other on the south side (closer to downtown Geneva).  They are back to back weekends, starting with the north side vineyards.  It was a fun little outing for only $15 - as we have learned, wine is one of the few things that aren't outrageously priced, apparently including wine tasting!  It was a great afternoon and I discovered that I'm not allergic to Swiss wines!  Usually, I start to feel sick after just a few sips, but after stopping at 5 different wineries and sampling 4-5 different wines from each, I was feeling fine.  Marty remarked that I won't be a cheap date anymore - something I always claimed as a perk to me being allergic to alcohol and always ordering water. :)

no officer, we haven't been drinking...

Other than being under the weather, the boys are doing really well with the recent changes - me going back to work, Grandma and Grandpa leaving, and our nanny.  Hayden is AMAZING with Beckham and is such a sweet big brother.  I am so thankful for this.  I walked away for a few minutes at dinner time the other night, and returned to discover that Hayden had taken over feeding Beckham.  So cute!  And Beckham agrees that Hayden is the best big brother.  He loves to chase after Hayden and squeals with delight when Hayden plays with him.

peek a boo!

Trying a couple of new recipes - mushroom tarts and curried butternut squash soup

During the week, we have shifted our dinner to post-bedtime, around 8pm.  Usually, I am making dinner while Marty is getting the boys ready for bed, and then I put Beckham to bed while he puts Hayden to bed.  It really is a team effort!  I am not looking forward to when Marty will be gone to Russia, Latin America and the US for 3 weeks straight.  Maybe I can convince someone to come and visit this summer! :)
